CHILD AND SPOUSAL SUPPORT IN A MEDIATED DIVORCE
You may be wondering how child support and spousal support would be decided in a mediation or collaborative divorce. My goal as a mediator or Collaborative attorney is to help you and your spouse come to an agreement that is mutually satisfying.
One first step is to exchange financial information so that you both have a good understanding of your finances and budgets. A divorce financial analyst can be used to help you with that process, if desired. Another step is to determine your goals and what you want from the divorce process. A divorce coach can help with communication issues and clarifying your goals.
Together you can then decide on the amount of support and the amount of time that it would be paid, keeping in mind your financial situation and your goals. We can also look at the state support guidelines as a point of information. Generally the result is an agreement based on a solid understanding of your finances that meets both of your needs.
